Today was more of a mellow day as we had a long distance to go to get from Taupo to Waikato National Park, which was about a 6. We broke it up in the middle by stopping in Waitomo to see the glowworm caves. These were incredible. We walked into a cave which in light, looks like a normal cave. However, once you go into darkness, these worms use bioluminescence to attract insects and capture them. It looks almost like a constellation of stars lighting up the ceiling of the cave. For part of the tour we were on a boat going through darkness with nothing but these worms lighting up the cave. I wasn't allowed to take photos, but here is a picture from the web that gives you an idea of what it looked like:
After our pitstop at the worm caves, it was off to Waikato National Park where our hostel was. Once we arrived we explored a hiking trail that lead down to a beautiful waterfall (It was actually where they filmed some of the scenes with Gollum in Lord of the Rings).
